Self Entrapment #4

Self Entrapment #4

  • Description
Self Entrapment #4 is an expansive and heavily layered fiber sculpture by Eric Gushee composed of recycled fishing nets stiffened in plastic, which casts lace-like shadows on the surrounding walls. Gushee does not disguise the material in a conscious celebration of its physicality, giving the work a spatial quality and haunting beauty. Part of his Labor Lost Series, which pays homage to laborers whose crafts have been discarded and deemed obsolete, though not lost, it is a contemporary relic of decadence and decline.

Eric Gushee

Artist

Eric Gushee

Eric Gushee’s large metal and wire sculptures are crafted from fiber, weaving and textile techniques. His work employs a conceptual and research-based methodology, drawing from mimetic traditions with abstract variations and adapting figures from nature. His sculptures showcase the profundity of complex systems arising through the repetition of a single act or gesture; he transforms construction and engineering materials into ephemeral yet industrial sculptures that integrate themes from architectural design and the natural and social sciences.
