Self Containment #1

Self Containment #1

  • Description
In Self Containment #1, Eric Gushee uses nylon strapping acquired from closed factories to re-envision the discarded material with fiber techniques, creating a heavily layered sculpture that’s a contemporary relic of both decadence and decline. Gushee does not disguise the material in a conscious celebration of its physicality. Exuding haunting beauty, this piece is part of his Labor Lost Series, which pays homage to laborers whose crafts have been discarded and deemed obsolete, though not lost.

Eric Gushee

Artist

Eric Gushee

Eric Gushee’s large metal and wire sculptures are crafted from fiber, weaving and textile techniques. His work employs a conceptual and research-based methodology, drawing from mimetic traditions with abstract variations and adapting figures from nature. His sculptures showcase the profundity of complex systems arising through the repetition of a single act or gesture; he transforms construction and engineering materials into ephemeral yet industrial sculptures that integrate themes from architectural design and the natural and social sciences.
